Geauga COUNTY KINSHIP CARE PROGRAM

   
 

  

The Kinship Navigator Program is a program offered by Geauga County Job and Family Services.  The program aims to assist grandparents and other relatives in providing stable and loving homes for children in need.  Program staff guide and advocate for non-traditional parents raising children.  They provide coordination and linkage to services such as health, education, child care, legal and other resources. 

WHAT IS KINSHIP CARE?

Kinship care is a term used to describe an arrangement where an adult is raising a relativeís child, such as grandparents raising grandchildren.   

REASONS FOR KINSHIP CARE

  • Alcohol and drug abuse

  • Divorce/separation

  • Abandonment

  • Teenage pregnancy

  • Death

  • Physical or mental illness/disability

  • Homelessness

  • Child abuse/neglect

  • Incarceration

COMMON CONCERNS OF CAREGIVERS

  • How do I deal with my adult child?

  • What should I do to assure the best for the children in the event of my own failing health or death?

  • What about my health, social life, and dreams for this time in my life?

  • Why is it so much more difficult to parent the second time around?

  • What help is available?

HOW CAN THIS PROGRAM HELP?

  • Provide information on available services at the state and local level.

  • Provide information about how to access those services. 

  • Educate caregivers about available financial assistance.

  • Direct caregivers to sources of help on legal issues.

  • Dispel isolation through a support group.
